Stress is something we all deal with at one time or another. Children can feel it from school and homework, adults may feel it from work or daily responsibilities, and older adults may experience it when facing health concerns or life changes.
Stress is not something most of us want to feel, but it is part of life. This post is meant to share a few simple ways to handle stress when it starts to feel like too much.
Stress Is a Normal Part of Life
One important thing to remember is that stress is normal, and it can show up in many different ways.
Sometimes stress can push us in a good way. It may help us prepare for something important, stay focused, or work toward a goal. Other times, stress can become too much. When we do not get a break from it, it can affect how we feel physically and emotionally.
Stress may show up as:
- Headaches
- Body aches
- High blood pressure
- Trouble relaxing
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Low mood or depression
The good news is that there are ways to cope with stress and manage it a little better.
Simple Ways to Cope With Stress
Here are a few things that may help when stress starts to build:
1. Take a Break
Take a break from what you are doing. Try to take a walk, stretch, or get up from your desk for a few minutes.
2. Get Some Exercise
A little movement can help. Walking is sufficient, so go outside and take a walk if you are able to.
3. Eat a Balanced Meal
Eating a balanced meal can also help support your body. Include vegetables, fruit, fish, lean proteins, and other nutritious foods when possible.
4. Practice Positive Thinking
Use positive self-talk. Positive thinking and encouraging self-talk may also help, such as:
“I can do this.”
“I am smart.”
“I am capable.”
“I know this.”
These small reminders may help you feel more grounded during stressful moments.
Try Deep Breathing
Another way to help reduce stress is something simple called deep breathing.
- Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor and your hands resting in your lap.
- Close your eyes, if that feels comfortable, and try to relax your muscles.
- Take slow, deep breaths using your stomach and diaphragm.
- Focus on each breath as it comes in and goes out. Continue for a few minutes, or for about 10–15 minutes if that feels right for you.
- When you are finished, slowly open your eyes and take a moment before going back to your day.
Why Deep Breathing Can Help?
Deep breathing can help the body relax. It may also help reduce stress, ease tension, and bring a sense of calm.
Sometimes taking a few quiet minutes to breathe is enough to help you feel a little more refreshed and ready to continue.
My hope is that the next time you begin to feel stressed, you can try one of these techniques and see what helps.
Remember, stress is normal. What matters is having a few healthy ways to deal with it.
